What makes a really good cookie exchange? Gail Heintzelman, of Northumberland, has hit upon the perfect recipe: A gathering of fun-spirited women, each bringing four dozen of her favorite Christmas treat to share with the group. Gail could stop right there and she'd have a fun, beneficial night. But like all good recipes, the perfect Christmas cookie exchange requires a few more ingredients and extra touches. The former Selinsgrove Area Intermediate School science teacher dressed up her cozy log home with whimsical Christmas decorations, cooked a small feast for her guests and found some fun games. The ladies ended up chuckling, chortling and laughing all night.

The crisp snow-spotted December night faded from memory as Gail welcomed friends into her warm home, giving each a holiday-themed name tag: Santa, Jingle Bell, Blitzen, Naughty, Tinsel, etc. The women placed their tins and Tupperware on the dining table, which boasted a centerpiece of a sparkling white Christmas tree decked out with, appropriately enough, cookie cutters and candy canes. "It's my chance to help celebrate the holidays with friends," Gail said, "especially now that I’m retired. I don't get to see my co-workers."
